Sthala Purana — the story
The Dakshineshwar sthala-purana is a LIVING-MEMORY saint-biography tradition centered on RANI RASHMONI'S 1844 MA-KALI-DREAM-INSTRUCTION and the subsequent Ramakrishna-Paramahamsa-life at the shrine. RANI RASHMONI'S STORY: born Rashmoni Das 1793 into a Kaivarta-caste (fishing-community, traditional social-hierarchy-excluded) family in Halisahar (North 24 Parganas), married Rajchandra Das (a Halisahar-area zamindar). When Rajchandra died c. 1830, Rashmoni (then 37) assumed full management of his estate — unusually for an upper-Bengali-woman of her era, and even more-unusually for a "lower-caste" widow. She expanded the business-holdings substantially, becoming one of the wealthiest women in Kolkata and Bengal. She engaged in EXTENSIVE PHILANTHROPY: funded ghats, canals, ponds, educational-institutions; stood-up-to-British-colonial-authorities on fishing-rights issues (the famous 1840s Rashmoni-fishing-court-case against the East India Company); supported the Gangasagar-pilgrimage-route infrastructure. A devout Kali-devotee, Rashmoni planned a major pilgrimage to Kashi (Varanasi) and Puri-Jagannath c. 1844-1847 to seek moksha-merits. However, her "lower-caste-widow" status was being socially-obstructed at several pan-India Brahmin-only-temples she wished to visit; anticipating exclusion, her pilgrimage-plans were fraught. On the EVE OF HER KASHI-JOURNEY (traditional-narrative-date c. 1844-1847), MA KALI APPEARED IN HER DREAM and said: "My dear daughter, you need not travel to Kashi to see me. Instead, build a grand temple for me on the banks of the Ganga at Dakshineshwar, and I WILL MANIFEST THERE FOR YOU AND FOR ALL WHO COME TO SEE ME." Rashmoni immediately abandoned her Kashi-plans, acquired 25 ACRES OF LAND at Dakshineshwar village, and began 8-year temple-construction c. 1847. The dream-based-foundational narrative parallels Shani-Shingnapur (shepherd's-dream), Mandsaur-Pashupatinath (community-dream), and similar traditional Hindu-temple-founding patterns. Temple consecration on Rath-Yatra Day (31 May 1855) required Brahmin-priestly-validation, but most pan-Bengal-Brahmins REFUSED to officiate due to caste-prejudice. Rashmoni's son-in-law Mathur Babu eventually found RAMKUMAR CHATTOPADHYAY (a young learned Brahmin from Kamarpukur village) willing to transcend caste-prejudice. Ramkumar officiated at the consecration and served as head-priest c. 1855-1856 before his own death; his younger brother GADADHAR CHATTOPADHYAY (future Ramakrishna Paramahamsa) took over priestly-duties and would spend 31 years (1855-1886) at Dakshineshwar — becoming one of history's most-influential Hindu saints there.
